Umgababa actor nominated for award

Vote for Ndumiso by sending an SMS ‘LYD674’ to 45633.

An Umgababa teen has been nominated for best actor at the Live Your Dream SA Youth Awards. Ndumiso Gasa, 19, caught the acting bug when he wrote, directed, filmed, edited and acted in his first movie Sylza Tsotsi in 2015. He followed that up with Drug Trafficking part one and two in 2016 and 2017. His third movie Hustlers was shot in Umgababa and Magabeni in 2018.

“Acting is more like a calling for me. I never chose acting – acting chose me. I never did drama at school.” Ndumiso attended Amagcino Primary and matriculated at Umcothoyi High School last year. “I did my own editing and sound for my first movie in 2015, which I filmed on my cellphone. In 2016 I borrowed a small camera. In 2017 I bought two cameras, a Sony and Samsung, and a laptop to do my editing with Pinnacle Studio 15. I am now looking to buy a more professional camera.”

He uploads his work as a web series on Facebook and Youtube, where he said he receives both positive and negative feedback, but the majority say he should continue doing what he loves. He was keen to study film at DUT this year, but unfortunately fell short of the required score. He has joined an agency in Durban that helps him with auditions.

His love of being behind the camera, writing, directing and editing has now broadened into acting and he has just completed filming his scenes for the movie Step Mother that is being shot in Umgababa. He plays a drug lord and the movie will be released onto DVD. “I was allowed to hang around the set and learn from the director. I’m trying my best to get into the film industry and I am keen to work on sets to learn more.

In December and January I start work on the film Why Men Are Trash, which is being shot in Umgababa and Magabeni, where I play a boy who has been deserted by his mother. The movie will be on Mzani Magic. The South Coast is a good area for film making. My goal is now to be in front of the camera and if I get the chance, head to Hollywood.”

Vote for Ndumiso from 1 September to 27 November by sending an SMS ‘LYD674’ to 45633. SMSes cost R1.50 and you can vote as many times as you like.
