Former SUN editor passes on

John served on the Caxton Editorial Task Team and was instrumental in training other journalists.

John Miller, former editor of the SUN Newspapers from the mid 1970s to 1993, passed away on Wednesday, 15 July.

According to Heather Butler, also a former editor and who followed John as editor and worked with him, first as a journalist, then as assistant editor from 1982 said, “He was a journalist par excellence. He edited papers, from news gathering to layout and preparing the paper for the printing presses, which was done at the SUN’s old office in Lagoon Centre in Amanzimtoti.  John made the SUN an award-winning newspaper. From the time the Caxton Awards for Excellence were introduced, the papers, edited by John, were winners. He was an innovative thinker and introduced various features into the SUN.  He had an off-the-wall sense of humour.”

John left the SUN to follow his ambitions, but returned to the Caxton fold some years later when he helped set up other papers in the group.

John served on the Caxton Editorial Task Team and was instrumental in training other journalists.

“He taught me everything I knew about the basics of a local newspaper. We worked hard and had fun times. I extend sympathy to his widow, Ingrid, and their daughter, Gemma,” added Heather.

His wife, Ingrid, was unable to comment at this time.
