Holidaymaker mutilated in lift

A 37-year-old Scottburgh holidaymaker survived mutilation after being attacked by two teenagers in a lift at Peacehaven on Saturday.
Police are compiling identikits of the two attackers who are believed not to be locals. At 6pm on Saturday the woman entered the lift at the holiday apartment block in Cordiner Street, Scottburgh. Two teenagers were in the lift. As soon as the door closed, they both set upon the woman with a sharp instrument. She sustained over 50 cuts. She was slashed across the throat and miraculously the gash missed her jugular vein.

Competitor treated for exhaustion

One of the competitors in the Scottburgh to Brighton race on Saturday had to be treated for exhaustion after misleading information caused him to overshoot the finish point.
Alma Whiting, who was lying third in the singles division, paddled almost to the harbour mouth, when close to exhaustion he had to be rescued by the crew of a ski-boat. He collapsed on the beach as he was brought ashore and paramedics had to administer a drip.

Card tricksters at it again

Confidence tricksters are again active in Toti.
On Saturday, Bill Lee was accosted by four men. Bill was just leaving the post office when he was approached. He was told one of the men had won money and needed a witness to collect. Bill protested that his wife was ill and he was in a hurry. However, the men were very convincing and Bill went with them to the arcade near Endee Estates. There, on the steps, a man drew two cards and told Bill he had won R200.
“When I told them I couldn’t be bothered and didn’t have time for games and that I had no money anyway, the men went off,” said Bill.

Veggie thieves caught short

A handyman employed by the Isipingo traffic department was charged with theft recently.
The man was caught by police off-loading R3 000 worth goods, allegedly stolen from Ramesh Suklal, who operates a vegetable market from a marquee in Isipingo. A security guard employed to patrol the marquee at night phoned Suklal recently at midnight and told him that goods had been stolen from the marquee. The guard gave Suklal the registration number of the vehicle. He contacted the police who dispatched a vehicle to the scene.

Near drowning averted

A tragedy was averted when professional and voluntary lifesavers worked together to rescue two people near Inyoni Rocks on Sunday, 2 July.
According to a report from the town clerk/ acting chief executive, Dave Ongley, it is understood that the victims were members of a church group who were undergoing baptism in the surf when they were washed out to sea. A man was rescued from the surf but a woman was seen floating face-down in the surf in front of the rocks.
