Kingsburgh Lions cancel peace poster competition

We have had to find ways of collecting to distribute warm clothes, scarves and beanies.

Kingsburgh Lions Club has also had a hard time dealing with the devastating effect of Covid-19, with the restrictions and precautions it has had on families, businesses, institutions and civic organisations.

“We have had to find ways of collecting from our usual donors and knitters, to distribute warm clothes, scarves and beanies to those in need to keep our ‘anything warm’ and ‘beanies and scarves’ projects going this year,” said Kingsburgh Lions president, Moira Rigby.

“Instead of our usual monthly food collection project, we have joined forces with local churches by making monthly monetary contributions for the purchasing of food and other necessities. Our monthly diabetes and blood pressure testing has also had to be put on hold for the time being.”

After much deliberation and searching for solutions, the Lions unfortunately had to cancel its annual International Peace Poster competition this year. “Our members look forward to viewing and enjoying the talent and creativity of Grade 6 and 7 learners from participating local schools every year.

It is one of the highlights of the year for us, but logistically, with the uncertainty surrounding schools opening and finding a ‘new’ normal of education, we felt that teachers and learners would be under enough pressure without the added responsibility of having to oversee an art competition.

“As this project is meant to be fun, as well as competing for monetary prizes for participating learners and their schools, we decided it should not become an onerous task and rather shelve it for this year.”

The theme for this year was ‘Peace through Service’, which would have allowed imaginations to take flight, and, as in the past, deliver some thought-provoking and interesting interpretations. “The decision was not taken lightly, but we hope next year will lend itself to service clubs resuming many of their usual projects in a more stress-free way.”
