It’s official – you can cast a line in Amanzimtoti

Walking, running, hiking or exercising on the beach is not permitted.

There were plenty of cheers when the much-debated lifting of restrictions was eventually elaborated by the Minster of Forestry and Fisheries on Friday, 5 June. In terms of the government gazette, recreational fishing by people in possession of valid fishing licenses is now allowed in level three, alongside commercial and small scale fishermen.

While recreational fishing, hunting and self-drive visits to private or public game reserves and national parks were listed as activities that the Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries had included in the directions under level three, it was only gazzetted and therefore made lawful on Friday.

“While this also extends to spear and other fishing that includes the use of boats and other craft, it specifically excludes charters and also does not allow for fishermen to be accompanied by non-fishing friends, family or other individuals who are seemingly using the opportunity to place feet on sand,” said ward 97 councillor, Andre Beetge.

However, be aware that walking, running, hiking or exercising on the beach is not permitted.
