Hope for tourism sector

All accommodation establishments that wish to apply for rates rebates are required to be a member of the local CTO, Sapphire Coast Tourism, as well as Tourism KwaZulu Natal or EDTEA, in order to meet the criteria for the application process.

The tourism sector is one of the most affected industries due to lockdown regulations.  While level three brings some relief to the tourism product owners, many businesses either remain closed or trade on a limited basis.

Sapphire Coast Tourism’s Romy Wenzel said, “With the annual sardine run possibly making its way to the Upper South Coast soon, the diving fraternity would have been full in swing this time of the year.  Many local, as well as international tourists would have come to explore the greatest shoal on earth. The same applies to accommodation establishments that are extremely limited with leisure tourism being prohibited at present. However, as from Monday, 1 June, establishments will no longer require a letter from the minister of tourism to operate. Businesses are required to accommodate those in the permitted services as well as keep records for inspections by the department.”

Note:

  •  The Tourism Bureau, based at 95 Beach Road, Amanzimtoti, re-opened its doors on Tuesday, 2 June.
  • Durban Tourism, assisted by all nine community tourism organisations has been busy behind the scenes planning a way forward to revive the tourism sector within the greater Durban area.
  • Going forward, with the financial year coming to an end on 30 June, special membership fees will be implemented to assist all current members during these challenging times. Existing members will be offered a 50 per cent discount on 2019/ 2020 membership fees.
