Sardines make their way to local shores
Shoals were spotted in Illovo, Winklespruit and Umgubaba beaches.
Sardine shoals made their way to local shores during the early hours of Wednesday morning, 3 June.
The annual sardine run certainly stirred up excitement in the community.
Shoals were spotted in Illovo, Winklespruit and Umgubaba beaches. Sardines are considered as the greatest shoal on earth and it has managed to put smiles on the faces of netters across KwaZulu-Natal.
Due to lockdown, this year’s sardine run has been notably different since onlookers are prohibited to visit beaches. There has also been questions raised regarding social distancing while netting.
Local angler, Pregan Govender, stated that he is doing his utmost best to ensure that those assisting with the sardine run are complying with regulations put in place.
“We ensure that the temperature of each assistant is checked in the morning and afternoon. They all have proper identification cards to make sure only fishermen and netters are allowed at the beaches. We have also made certain that they are supplied with face masks. It is difficult to make sure that we are social distancing especially since sea conditions may not allow it,” said Govender.
