Residents welcome lifting of alcohol ban

Many residents see this as a victory as the sale of alcohol was prohibited since the start of lockdown. 

There were smiles on faces and no Monday blues insight.  This comes after President Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement to lift the ban on alcohol from 1 June.

Residents were eager to purchase their booze and lined up at liquor stores. Many residents see this as a victory as the sale of alcohol was prohibited since the start of lockdown.

In a national address, president Ramaphosa said, “Alcohol may be sold for home consumption only under strict conditions, on specified days and for limited hours. Announcements in this regard will be made once we have concluded discussions with the sector on the various conditions.  The sale of tobacco products will remain prohibited in alert level 3 due to the health risks associated with smoking.”

New regulations implemented states that alcohol will only be sold according to scheduled times.
The sale of liquor will be permitted between Monday to Thursday from 9am to 5pm.  No liquor is allowed to be consumed onsite and no liquor would be sold from Friday to Sunday.
