A second chance for unwanted items

There are many uses for old items, you just have to find its purpose.

Since the start of lockdown, orange bag collections have been placed on hold.
Residents can use this time to be creative and up-cycle some of their belongings that would have been destined for the garbage.

Founder of Social Waste Management, Jean-Claude Matthyson, explained that up-cycling allows unwanted items to have a second chance and said, “Up-cycling is simply not seeing waste as waste, but as valuable, reusable and repurposable materials rather than items that need processing for recycling. By up-cycling we will be able to reduce the amount of materials needed to be recycled.”

When asked what are some of the ways that people could up-cycle,

he said, “One of the most common examples of up-cycling is using your ice-cream container as a lunch box. We can challenge ourselves to be creative, while doing good for the environment. Residents can create a food garden from used containers such as coke bottles or crates. Glass jars can be up-cycled into fairly light containers, storage for spices, pickled products and jams. Strong cardboard boxes can be up-cycled into a cat’s beds, storage containers and speaker boxes. A two litre plastic bottle can be up-cycled into many things, such as a broom, bird feeder, hydro plant container, gravity fed water dispenser for pets water bowl or a greenhouse.”
