‘Chop shop’ bust in Isipingo

The residence has been used for a number of months as a ‘chop shop’.

Response officers bust a vehicle theft and hijacking syndicate operating in the Isipingo area on Thursday, 7 May.
Information was relayed to role players by members of ET Rapid Response’s tactical response team (TRT) about the syndicate and it was established that parts of a vehicle that was stolen in February in the Amanzimtoti area were being advertised on the internet.

Relevant role players were informed and a task team was formed, with officers from ET, a tracking company, Isipingo SAPS crime prevention, detectives, RTI, SAPS vehicle theft unit and the CCPO.

ET and CCPO officers tracked down the complainant, who is a professional mechanic and willing to assist in the operation.  The information led to the interception of a foreign VW polo, in which suspects admitted to be attempting to sell the parts.

They co-operated and led the task team to an Isipingo residence, where a number of stripped motor vehicle parts were found, which were positive on Toti theft cases. “Upon further inspection a vehicle was found with suspected stolen parts and it was identified by the complainant due to identification of personalised markings on certain parts,” said ET Rapid Response South Coast managing member, Tony Lokker.

“It was established that the residence has been used for a number of months as a ‘chop shop’ and housing for wanted motor vehicles.” Two suspects were apprehended and detained at Isipingo SAPS. A vehicle and other stolen parts were impounded and RTI took custody of the foreign vehicle for further investigation.

“It was through the proficient coordination and timeous mobilisation of appropriate resources, relating to vehicle theft crimes, that this operation was a success.”
