Domino Foundation continues providing relief

In normal times, Thandeka feeds children before they go to school in the mornings.

“I see so many hungry people and get very frustrated that we are not able to feed them all. I have desperately needy people messaging and emailing me all the time.” Those are the words of Cheryl Dann, leader of the Domino Foundation’s South Durban nutrition programme.

Before Covid-19, she was overseeing the feeding of over 4,000 children in schools, churches and early childhood centres in Amanzimtoti and surrounding areas.

Domino’s disaster response unit, as part of the KZN disaster response team, including CityHope, Nation Changers, South African Red Cross and Zoe-Life, is stretched in its efforts to feed multitudes of distressed people in the northern areas of eThekwini and had to commandeer the bakkie Cheryl uses for deliveries to the crèches. But the bakkie is back, loaded with Relief Aid hampers and maize meal, and Cheryl and her son Timothy, with kitchen co-ordinator, Purity Ngcobo, have been on the delivery run.

One of their drop-off points is the Young Stars Nutrition and Development Centre, a beneficiary of Domino owned by Thandeka Duma, who is feeding the elderly and very young in Lovu Township. In normal times, Thandeka feeds children before they go to school in the mornings with sandwiches, hampers and bread supplied by Domino’s nutrition programme. Other relief hampers are going to Umgababa, KwaMakhutha and to people who have lost jobs and the vulnerable in Toti, Warner Beach and Winkelspruit.

Cheryl and Tim made another drop-off at Seed of Hope, another of Domino’s beneficiaries which, in normal times, helps child-headed households, the elderly and the Bhekulwandle community. “People are most welcome to contact me on 083-201-0554 or email feedingtoti@domino.org.za and then drop off items to supplement the relief aid hampers at my home,” said Cheryl.
