Extension looms over SPCA

Initially, the organisation needed to raise R150 000 in donations to stay afloat during the three-week lockdown.

The lockdown extension has been especially hard on welfare organisations.  Amanzimtoti SPCA is one of the organisations that has found this period challenging since it relies on donations.

Stacey Wall, media officer of Amanzimtoti SPCA said, “We had to tell our animals waiting in the kennels that it’s going to be an extra two weeks. It’s almost as if they understood. But we told them it’s going to be okay. We are staying positive. The news of the extension was a big shock for us and our immediate worry is how are we going to survive without the income we usually rely on from our charity shops and boarding facilities.”

Initially, the organisation needed to raise R150 000 in donations to stay afloat during the three-week lockdown.

“With the additional two weeks added, we now need an additional R100 000. We know this is a huge ask. But we are desperate. We form an essential service to the voiceless who rely on us. Our work doesn’t end during lockdown.  The support we have seen from you, the public, has been incredible. We hate to have to ask for more, but we need an additional R100 000 to get through. Yesterday another R2 500 was raised, bringing our total to R97 000 of the R250 000 we need to stay afloat without our sources of income (charity shops, etc.) Thank you from the bottom of our heart to every single one of you who has donated so far,” she said.
