Kingfisher rescued on Amanzimtoti Main Beach

A beautiful and brightly coloured kingfisher found itself stranded on Amanzimtoti Main Beach on Wednesday, 8 April.

The bird was rescued by acting beach manager, Jace Govender, who was captivated by its colours.

“I was fascinated by all the bright colours and had a closer look at it. I then realised that the bird was unable to fly despite appearing to be in perfect condition. At first glance I thought it was a baby bird that was separated from its flock, however, I was later informed that it was an adult,” he said

Kingfishers are one of the most brilliantly coloured birds, and many have strident voices and dramatic courtship displays. Most of them have some blue plumage, and many have red bills. They have adapted well to man’s alteration of natural habitats, and can even be seen in suburban gardens.

“I kept the bird in a box until officials from KZN Wildlife who transported it to Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife (Crow). The bird is now in good health. This should stand as a reminder that even though we are in a lockdown, we can still do a good dead and help out however we can,” Jace added.
