Domino Foundation despairs loss of volunteers

Karen said she will be waiting to hear from all the faithful members of the volunteers ‘brigade’ once the lockdown is over.

In these trying days of lockdown, there are many whose giving hearts are being frustrated because they do not have access to the needy people who, in normal times, depend to a great extent on the volunteers’ generosity with their time, skills, knowledge and experience.

Like every other NPO, the Domino Foundation has had to close its doors to all volunteers for the duration. “We can’t put a price on how invaluable our volunteers are to all our programmes, which touch almost 12 000 lives every day,” said marketing manager, Karen Brokensha. “Their help allows us to plan our programme schedules and activities effectively, but the coronavirus has put a temporary stop to that.”

For now, the making of sandwiches that makes up part of Domino’s Feeding programme, which delivers 4 500 meals daily to schools and ECD centres in Durban North, the city and in the South Basin, has been put on hold. Volunteers who travel to township schools to implement the foundation’s literacy programme have parked their cars and the people who love nothing more than to play with toddlers at the Domino Babies’ Home are wondering when they will be able to connect with their little friends again.

“We also had to cancel our school holiday community service weeks, where teenagers from schools around the city would normally have had the chance to engage with Domino impacting the lives of disadvantaged and marginalised members of the community. These times often are the spark which ignites a passion to do more and to offer to volunteer.”

Karen said she will be waiting to hear from all the faithful members of the volunteers ‘brigade’ once the lockdown is over and from prospective new volunteers. “If anything, the needs will be even greater then, as his time is affecting vulnerable people severely and we will need more willing hands and hearts.” Email Karen at marketing@domino.org.za.
