South African lotto winners have to wait to claim their winnings until the lockdown is suspended

The current lockdown has affected every business sector. How are lottery draws and winnings being handled during this period?

Currently a third of the world’s population is living under lockdown to prevent the spreading of the coronavirus. People’s everyday lives as they know it, have changed. Everybody had to adapt the way of how and when they are doing things.

Despite the pandemic and strict rules about what you are allowed to buy on your outing to the shops, people won’t stop trying their luck at buying a lotto ticket.

Even though people are still allowed to buy a lotto ticket in countries like South Africa, Ireland and New Zealand, they will have to wait to celebrate their big win. Depending on the amount that they’ve won, they won’t be able to claim big pay-outs until the lottery offices are open again after the lockdown.

Luckily in South Africa, the winners have 365 days to claim their winnings from the day of the draw. Lotto draws will continue as scheduled every week. Lotto players are encouraged to check the SA lotto results online from the safety of their own homes instead of taking their tickets to the retailers.

Lucky South African Winners

The first lucky South African won R7,4 million on the 25th of March, just hours before the national lockdown started. The lotto numbers were 10, 13, 19, 25, 42, 47 and Bonus Ball 35. To claim this massive pay-out, they will have to wait until lockdown is suspended. This, after the National Lottery has informed the public that their head office and all regional offices will be closed during lockdown.

Other lucky winners who will have to wait to claim their big wins, are the Daily Lotto winners. On the 30th of March someone won R232,334.30, their lucky numbers were 6, 14, 16, 27 and 30. On the 31st of March R291,812.30 was won with the numbers 2, 7, 20, 21 and 35. And on the 1st of April with the number 5, 8, 11, 20 and 32, R266,761.90 was won.

Everyone in Rochestown, Cork City in Ireland, are urged to check their lottery tickets as the winner of €1 million (approx. R20 million) is still unknown. The celebration-champagne might have to remain on ice for the lockdown period though. According to Premier Lotteries Ireland, people can still claim their winnings at the Lotto HQ, after making an appointment if they win more than €15,000 (approx. R308,000).

UK winners

An 18-year-old from Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent in England, won himself £20,000 (approx. R459,000) a month for a year. This after he decided to buy a scratch card when he went out to buy a few things. Even though the money is deposited into his bank, he will have to wait until after the lockdown to spend his winnings and celebrate his big win. What a way to celebrate the end of self-isolation.
