Domino Foundation fights the virus with a sparring partner

Customers are asked to buy products in their stores towards the Foundation’s Relief Hampers.

As part of disaster management strategy is responsiveness and to tackle some of the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic among the most vulnerable in the communities, Toti’s Domino Foundation is running its Healthy Comm-Unity campaign in conjunction with five SuperSpars and one KwikSpar store in the city.

Customers at the Avonmore, Eastmans, Gateway, Glenwood, Holdens and Kensington outlets are asked to buy products in their stores towards the Foundation’s Relief Hampers. Products are identifiable by the Spar and Domino shelf talkers and they are two bars of Germex soap, tooth brush and toothpaste, 750ml bottle of Spar bleach, four Spar toilet rolls and a five-litre Spar bottle of still water. Non-perishable items, such as rice, maize meal and beans, may also be included.

Once Spar customers have purchased these items, they can drop them off at Anthem Church, 37 Mackeurtan Avenue, Durban North; Glenridge Church, 65 Masabalala Yengwa Avenue, Durban; CityHill Church, 1 Greenmeadow Lane, Hillcrest; One Life Foundation, 462 Alexandra Road, Pietermaritzburg; or The CommUnity Project, 18 Trevor Wadley Close, Warner Beach. Glenwood SuperSpar has a collection bin in store.

“Other churches are invited to come on board as drop-off zones. The campaign aim to put together 100,000 hampers at satellite packing stations,” said Cathy Whittle, who heads up the disaster relief unit. As part of the KZN Response Network, Domino’s disaster relief team is working alongside NGO’s partners CityHope Disaster Relief, National Changers, The South African Red Cross Society and Zoe Life, organisation that are all well-equipped as an effective conduits to get the hampers to where they are most needed.

“The SA Red Cross and Global Shapers, a network of young people who drive action and change, will be the feet on the ground for distribution. The Dennis Hurley Centre and Zoe Life will work together into the central Durban CBD. Geo-mapping monitoring and evaluation tools will assist the operation to avoid missing some areas and duplicating in others. “It is vital we get these hampers to the elderly, the seriously vulnerable and people living with TB and HIV.”

Volunteers, operating in small clusters, will be critical in distributing vouchers sent via cellphones to recipients identified by community leaders. Recipients will bring their vouchers on their phones to the relevant cluster to get their hampers.
