Bullet shatters lounge window in Isipingo

MEMBERS of an Isipingo family narrowly escaped death when a bullet smashed through a window in their lounge and landed on the floor last week.
Raj Sunderlall of Lotus Park, Isipingo, said his daughter and in laws were in the room next door to the lounge on Wednesday afternoon when they heard glass shattering. They investigated but couldn’t find any glass. Later Sunderlall came back from work and found the window in the lounge shattered.

Tioxide emissions are down 

IT’s cleaner air for South Coast residents with the installation of an additional mist precipitator to reduce sulphorous emissions at Tioxide.
In addition two holding tanks will be built to eliminate variations in the quality of liquid effluent before it’s discharged into the sea. Spokesperson for Tioxide, Judy Pitts, said the company had halved its emissions of acid and metal into the sea.
She added that an independent survey done within the last six months showed “the impact zone, originally 500 metres in diameter had shrunk by 75 per cent and would rehabilitate.”

Highway pile-up

ON Sunday afternoon 13 people were injured in a three car pile-up involving an NPA traffic vehicle.
Officers were parked along the highway outside Winklespruit when a van slammed into the back of a stationary car which in turn collided with the NPA car. Two officers were injured as well as the passengers in the van. The van overturned and burst into flames.
The driver was taken into custody by the SAPS.

Cops ‘n robbers

PROTECTION services members had a typical cops and robbers chase on Saturday night.
At about 8.30pm members tried to stop a vehicle in Kingsburgh. The driver sped away with two cars in hot pursuit. They chased the car all the way to Umfume firing shots and puncturing the petrol tank and one of the tyres.
Finally the vehicle came to a standstill. They pursued the suspects into the bushes but lost them in the dark.

Cache shootout

TWO men were killed and a policeman injured in a shootout near Adam’s Mission last Monday morning.
An ISU patrol received a tip-off about an arms cache in the area. They knocked on the door and were refused entry.
Shots were fired as they forced their way into the house, and in the gun battle between suspects and the ISU one policemen was wounded in the leg and shoulder.
Three suspects were arrested and two firearms were recovered.
