The items that were collected included: 9kg of cooking oil bottles, 7.8kg mayonnaise bottles, 8.5kg alcohol bottles, 10.2kg roll-on deodorants, 1.1kg margarine tubs, 22.9kg shoes and slops, 14kg maas containers, 4.1kg bottle tops, 5.1kg cleaning products, 24.8kg plastic bottles and 202.8kg of other materials.

It was an eye-opener for learners, parents and teachers who attended a clean-up campaign at Umbogintwini Beach on Saturday, 29 February. The Clean Surf Project crew, consisting of community members, collected a total of 310kg of waste with samples of selected items being taken.

The organisation’s Romy Wenzel said, “Learners, parents and teachers from Umkomaas Primary School Enviroclub got to see how much litter gets washed out from inland, into the river out to sea. The CSP team would like to thank everyone who participated, Umkomaas Primary School, eThekweni Municipality beach management and beach cleaning for assisting with the waste removal on completion of the leap day clean up.”
