Councillor inducted into Amanzimtoti Lions

The call goes out to young and old to get involved and to make a positive difference.

Ward 97 councillor, Andre Beetge was inducted as a Lion at the Amanzimtoti Lions Club’s 52nd annual charter dinner on Saturday, 29 February at Amanzimtoti Bowling Club. The event was to celebrate the Lions club’s birthday with a formal three-course dinner.

Andre was inducted by past district governor Ken Toward and president Shayne Tochner will be Lion Andre’s sponsor. “We are glad to have Lion Andre in our team, to help and serve the community of Amanzimtoti, which he already does so well.”

Many moons ago Andre was the youngest Round Table member in South Africa. “Although a lot of water has since run into the sea, there has always remained the intention to serve the people, be it as a police officer, concerned citizen, politician or now on a different platform, as a member of Lions International.

“Society has become of such that its citizens have become complacent, relying more and more on government to satisfy their every need, fast forgetting that there was a time when we actually did things for ourselves, when we were the leading nation on the African continent.

The same applies to our service organisations such as Round Table, Lions and Rotary, as although the need from communities increase against the backdrop of a fast failing system, those who are prepared to give of themselves, whether in time, labour or otherwise, have deminished to a drop in the ocean.

“Not one to believe in ‘they’, but rather in ‘us’, I am both humbled and honoured to be able to serve our community on the Lions’ platform as we attempt to bring positive changes to people’s lives. I am proud that my sons have taken up a similar burden within Round Table, with the younger recently being elected as the vice-chairperson of the Umhlanga chapter.

The call goes out to young and old to get involved, to be a doer and not just a talker, to make a positive difference, for in the words of John F Kennedy: Ask not what your community can do for you, but what you can do for your community!”
