Burnt Grade R Amanzimtoti learner still to return to school

The department said he must return to school and they can’t do anything.

The Grade R learner who was burnt during class has not returned to his Lovu Township school where the incident happened. Five-year-old Mpendulo Mkhezi was badly burnt on both his hands and his right leg only a week after enrolling at Andrew Zondo Primary School, on Wednesday, 21 January.

No word has come from the department on its findings and at a meeting at the school on Monday, 24 February his mother was told by the school that their hands are tied until they hear back from the department.

“Mpendulo went to the physiotherapist last week and his burns are a little bit better,” said his grandmother Busisiwe Shoba, who informed the SUN of the incident. The little boy lost both his parents and lives with his aunt. “He is still in pain, but we have painkillers to give him. When I asked him what happened, he said he fell into the fire while walking to the toilet.”

The little boy has been staying with Busisiwe who took three weeks off work to look after him. He is now back at home with his aunt.

“The school has offered to buy him a new uniform, but because I went to the police, they can’t help us further. The department said he must return to school and they can’t do anything, because they are waiting for the police to investigate and I haven’t heard anything back from the police. The principal only seems worried about the school being in trouble.”
