The Odds for The 2020 Nobel Peace Prize

The winner for the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize will be named before the year ends, and we already have some strong candidates for the award.

Since 1901, the world has witnessed different Nobel Peace Prize winners. It is an award that is
awarded annually as a fitting accolade for persons believed to have done the best in terms of
bringing peace to the world.

As one of five Nobel awards, the most significant factor considered
is a person’s input in matters that are deemed to directly broker peace among warring nations, for
example, abolition or withdrawal of armies from a point to facilitate negotiation.

The awards for the Nobel Prize have never been short of controversy, with so many people
voicing their concerns that more deserving personalities are often left out in the nominations.

The winner for the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize will be named before the year ends, and we already
have some strong candidates for the award.

The Front Runners

Greta Thunberg is a renowned environmental activist from Sweden, and at only 16, the odds are
already in her favor to take the prize home.

She rose to international recognition following her
strong stance on nations to take action on climate change. She is of the opinion that governments
are not doing enough in the efforts to combat the imminent risks of climate change to humanity.
It is a widely-talked about topic in the majority of world symposiums, but she’s has been vocal
about how able nations have become complacent about the whole issue.

There was some widespread outcry not only from Swedes, but also from a large section of
followers who felt that she deserved the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize, but the eventual winner was
Abiy Ahmed Ali, the Ethiopian Prime Minister. Most bookmakers are putting Greta as the best
bet for the 2020 edition.

Besides Thunberg, there are also a few other notable candidates for the same, including top
performing organizations. The UN’s Refugee Agency, the UNHCR are among the bookmakers’
favorites to give the young Swede a run, but it is only January, and a lot can happen. The UN’s
Refugees Agency has been championing for the rights of displaced communities and refugees,
and given how common such issues have become, it could yet be their year.
The UNHCR have won the prestigious award twice before, in 1954 and again in 1981, and the
bookies cannot rule out a third prize. Their consistency in handling global calamities will
certainly add to their push. Ladbrokes and Betfair are offering odds of 10/1 and 8/1 respectively
in favor of UNHCR.

The Surprises

The US and Iran are holding the world at ransom as of now, following the killing of Iranian
Chief Commander Qaseem Soleimani by US forces. Observers have talked about a possible war
outbreak that could culminate to the WWIII, but those are pure speculations. God forbid. What
can be written without fear of contradiction is that there is a lot of global tension, and the person

who will steer the warring parties to a peaceful end to this will most definitely be strong
candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize. US President Donald Trump is a controversial figure known
for some divisive tactics, but if he can manage to pull the whole thing from the jaws of war, then
he’ll certainly be a candidate for the Nobel Peace award.
