Elderly man drowns at Pipeline Beach, Amanzimtoti

Lifeguards and VEMA members attempted to resuscitate the man, but he did not respond to CPR efforts.

A 62-year-old man drowned at Pipeline Beach in Amanzimtoti on Sunday, 9 February.  Lifeguards from eThekwini and Amanzimtoti Lifesaving Club managed to pull him out of the water and began CPR.

The lifeguards, along with members of Voluntary Emergency Medical Assistance (VEMA), who were first on the scene, then attempted to resuscitate the man. He unfortunately did not respond to CPR and efforts were later called off.

ER24 were called in to declare the man dead and Metro Police and SAPS attended the scene for further investigation.

Jace Govender of Lifesaving South Africa said, “This case was highly traumatic for the lifeguards.  It was a sad and hard day for them.  The drowning occurred in a non-designated bathing area.”
