Helping hands for Khanya Hospice

Khanya Hospice hosts its first one day course for the year on Thursday, 27 February at 8am.

Khanya Hospice was delighted to start the year off on a positive note, with a number of donations to help them raise funds. “Sanjay Lutchman of the FBI Foundation donated boxes of second-hand clothes. Volunteers will put these articles up for sale in one of our three shops to generate income to help us sustain the work that our nursing staff do. We are not government-funded and have to do our own fundraising,” said CEO, Neil McDonald.

The Hospice shops can be found in Toti at South Gate Mall, 398 Kingsway, in Scottburgh at Kendon Centre, Arbuthnot Street, and in Pennington, which is sign-posted from first entrance to Pennington from Scottburgh.

The Dischem Foundation donate generously for the work that the nursing staff are doing in the area. “People don’t have to suffer with pain and our nurses are very good with pain and symptom control. With the donation, we are able to help some patients who are not on medical aid and cannot afford wound dressing, pain killers, food supplements and general toiletries. These donations really boost the moral of our nursing staff, as they are able to help and not feel helpless when patients cannot afford medication and are not financially well off.

Craigieburn artist, Maya Rampersad donated a piece of handmade art, in memory of her son-in-law who died from cancer, in honour of 4 February being World Cancer Day. “This piece of art is also on sale in our Hospice shop to generate income. We are always looking for volunteers to help in our shops, if you have the time and are able to.”
