Busy week for Amanzimtoti’s CCPO

Earlier that morning Snodey spotted a familiar suspect walking along the R603.

CCPO committee member, George Snodey and local crime fighters have had a busy week.

“If it wasn’t for a good informer base, we would really struggle to catch some of these criminals. A suspect broke into the garage at the Warners Ski Boat Club in October and stole a battery out of a tractor. I showed my informer his photo a while ago and on Saturday, 25 January he called to say the suspect was in Winkle, heading along Kingsway towards Warner Beach.”

Snodey called CCPO supervisor, Michael Mkhize to assist. “After we stopped him and showed him the photos, he eventually admitted it was him and that he had sold the battery to a scrapyard in Isipingo for R80.”

Thursday, 23 January

A CCPO foot patrol guard spotted a man carrying a bicycle in Winklespruit. He stopped the person and with assistance from response officer, Lloyd Maphumulo, it was established that he had stolen the bicycle from Shirley Road. The owner opened a case and the suspect was detained by Amanzimtoti SAPS.

“While I was at the police station to hand over the battery thief, I saw him standing in the holding cell. When I noticed his deformed ear, it rung a bell and after scrolling through my photos, found his mug shot. He was then positively linked to a house breaking in Illovo Beach Road in August. This was a classic double whammy for him.”

Earlier that morning Snodey spotted a familiar suspect walking along the R603 at about 7am, carrying items that caught his eye. When he stopped to question the suspect, he fled. He was chased down the R603 onto the N2, where he dropped some of the items and disappeared into the thick bush.

ET Rapid Response’s tactical response team (TRT) and Capt Heath Morrison of the Metro Police K9 unit responded to the call to assist and blocked off the area. “Our TRT assisted Capt Morrison on a very long and difficult track through the sugarcane and thick bush. About four hours later, the suspect was apprehended by Jet, Capt Morrison’s K9 partner,” said ET’s Tony Lokker.

All stolen items, including expensive tools, were recovered and the suspect, who was recently released from prison, was arrested and charged.
