Amanzimtoti police cell condemned

The SUN sent queries to Amanzimtoti SAPS, but no response was forthcoming.

Amanzimtoti SAPS’ holding cells have been condemned and prisoners have to be transported to either Umkomaas or Isipingo for incarceration.

The SUN sent queries to Amanzimtoti SAPS communication officer, Captain Charlene van der Spuy and station management, but no response was forthcoming. SAPS KZN media centre, however, did confirm the cells have been condemned.

“We can confirm that out cells for overnight detention is at this stage not suitable for detention and thus been closed. The station is detaining at surrounding stations, where space allows. The temporary holding cell is still being utilised, although it is not for overnight detention. The station has been liaising with the public works department, as they are the custodian of this building, to have the cells repaired,” said Col Thembeka Mbele.
