Repairs to Wessex Drive still on track

Once the gabian baskets are in place, the embankment will be back-filled and the bed stabelised.

Repairs to the Wessex Road washaway are on schedule and progressing well. That’s the latest word from Ward 97 councillor, Andre Beetge, whose office continues to be bombarded for information about the repair, especially with social media postings speculating whether the cavity has enlarged and the possible threat thereof to neighbouring properties, some as far as 100m from the actual site.

The washaway that occurred in September as a result of a damaged underground pipe presently necessitates road users to take a 1km detour via Oak, Akker and Patricia roads, which seems to be the cause of endless inconvenience.

“As previously reported, the washaway posed no immediate threat to either life or property and as such, the repair process followed normal supply chain tender processes, which in itself is somewhat of a dragged-out process. The matter was, however, from the start prioritised, which meant that it received attention over some storm damages that occurred in April 2019.

“The annual shut down of the building industry took its toll on progress, with contractors only returning to site in the second week of January. Once the gabian baskets are in place, the embankment will be back-filled and the bed stabelised, so that the roads department can install a new section of road with the necessary barriers,” said Beetge.

Although progress is somewhat hampered by restricted access for mechanical equipment and the occasional downpour, contractors and officials remain of the opinion that the repair will be completed before the end of February.
