New head at Amanzimtoti Primary School

I plan on retiring at the end of this year, so I won’t become principal.

Amanzimtoti Primary School has beefed up its security for the new school year. A proactive eye in the sky camera installed in Bernadotte Street monitors three sides of the premises and feeds images back to the ET Rapid Response control room. Guards on site also keep track of everyone entering or leaving the premises.

Another major change at the school is the appointment of Charlotte Boyers, 64, as acting principal after principal Doug Lanyon retired at the end of last year due to ill health. Tracey Vorster is acting deputy principal.

Charlotte has been with Toti Primary for 30 years. She was born in Johannesburg and did her schooling in the North-West Province. She studied at the Johannesburg College of Education and started her career teaching Grade 7 at Winchester Ridge Primary in Johannesburg. She moved onto to Mondeor High School, before her husband Derek transferred to Toti in 1981.

She took time off to raise her two children – Kim, 38, and Brendan, 35 – and then took up a post at Umlazi Commercial High. After that, she continued with her studies to finish a diploma in commerce subjects and opened a shoe shop. However, teaching is in her blood and she left that to join Toti Primary in 1990. She was appointed deputy principal in 2004.

“I taught all subjects in Grade 7 for most of my career, before focusing on mathematics, which I will continue to teach this year. I plan on retiring at the end of this year, so I won’t become principal, but I would be willing to join as a governing body member to assist with the transition, as I know this school so well.”

With an all time high intake of 788 learners, Toti Primary is fortunate to have someone with Charlotte’s experience at its helm.
