Suburban slaughter

St Winifreds residents are up in arms because beasts have been slaughtered in the neighbourhood.

Apart from that, Kingsburgh Council, at its own expense, levelled off a piece of ground adjoining the property to facilitate parking. Some 200 guests attended the house-warming party of Nkosinathi Maphumulo in Point Place at the weekend. Several residents contacted the SUN complaining about the slaughtering of animals in the residential area.

Twini golf course is under threat from industry or housing

There is a chance that the Umbogintwini golf course could disappear to make way for industry or housing.

AECI has included in its structure plan a clause to have the Umbogintwini golf course reclassified as ‘commercial and industrial’. However, acceptance by provincial authorities of the plan has been delayed. This is because no definitive usage was specified for the land presently occupied by the golf course.

Armed mob sets homes alight

Residents had to flee the Inzimandi informal settlement outside Amanzimtoti when an armed mob stormed the area and set at least 12 homes alight.

The incident took place on Sunday, 27 November. M Mkize (56) broke his leg as he tried to escape the attackers. He was also stabbed in the arm. A 17-year-old girl was admitted to hospital with severe burns. Fighting broke out when armed men went on the rampage, scattering people as they grabbed what possessions they could and fled.

Attack on the beach

A local fisherman has issued a warning to other beach goers to be on their guard.

He says there is a tall, slim man about, who gives the impression of being retarded, but then pulls out a knife and threatens people. Ahmed Khan, who was fishing on Twini Beach with his three children on Saturday, noticed the man come down onto the beach, walking very slowly and dragging his feet.

Power failure causes a problem in Umkomaas

There were no cooked breakfasts at Umkomaas this Sunday when the ‘lights went out’ at around 7.30am.

The cause of the power failure was a fire at the St Joseph’s Switching Sub Station at the entrance to Saiccor Village. A switching unit, containing HV cables, caught fire and the whole box was destroyed. A spokesman for Eskom said it was not known what had caused the fire.
