Kingsburgh Welfare empowers ahead of 16 Days of Activism

Training focused on empowering community members on how to help victims of abuse and break the cycle.

On the cusp of the start of 16 Days of Activism of violence against woman and children, Kingsburgh Child Welfare conducted a two-day training programme on 18 and 19 November, funded by AECI.

“Our training focused on empowering community members on how to help victims of abuse and break the cycle. We had Iris Canham do a presentation on healing of memories, which is built on different objectives,” said senior social worker, Sandra Govender.

Prevention dealt with breaking the cycle of dehumanisation; healing was restoring an enduring dignity, purpose and hope to marginalised individuals and communities; and empowerment was making new pathways possible by equipping individuals with the emotional tools to retake charge of their own lives.

“We ended our programme with a self-defence course done by Wessel and Ivan Marais of Combat Zone. We also had Sergeant Nondumiso Mncwabe explain the role of the SAPS Victim Support Centre.”
