ATM scammers bust in Amanzimtoti

With a case number to act on, the Metro Police K9 unit was called for backup.

Teamwork between the CCPO, ET Rapid Response and Blue Security once again proved to be a stumbling block for criminals in the Toti area.

Three ATM scammers were identified by a Blue Security patroller on Thursday. “They had a case of ATM fraud registered against them in the Sydenham area a few weeks ago. We held observation, hoping to catch them in the act, but unfortunately after watching them for nearly 30 minutes at DSM Mall, they left after failing to find a victim,” said CCPO committee member, George Snodey.

With a case number to act on, the Metro Police K9 unit was called for backup, and with the help of ET’s Tony Lokker and Louis van Ryneveld who followed the car South on the N2, it was eventually pulled off near Umkomaas. “All three men have records related to ATM fraud and it was also found they had fitted false registration plates to the vehicle, for obvious reasons. They were detained and with their vehicle, taken to Sydenham SAPS for further investigation.”

This suspect who Tony Lokker of ET and George Snodey of the CCPO helped apprehend in the bush behind DSM Mall in October for armed robbery with a dangerous weapon, got his just rewards last week when the Durban Court sentenced him to 12 years in prison.
