Umkomaas murder accused sentenced for two counts of murder and theft

Ganesh was granted 15 years imprisonment for each murder and five years for theft of motor vehicle, which will run concurrently.

“Hearing the horrific details of my aunt and uncle’s murder definitely opened up new wounds.”

These were the heart-wrenching words of Jace Govender who spoke on behalf of his bereaved loved ones following the sentencing of the double murder accused, Shalin Ganesh in the Pietermaritzburg High Court last week.

The victims, 79-year-old, Sathiaseelan and 74-year-old, Savathri Pillay, were brutally murdered in their home on Thursday, 1 August.

Ganesh was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for each murder and five years for theft of motor vehicle, which will run concurrently.

“As the family, we are all very disappointed with the sentence that the murderer received.  We have received no form of closure and nothing is going to bring these two innocent souls back.  It was a brutal murder and we believe that justice was not served. Everyone is just trying to rebuild their lives after the murders,” added Govender.

He also thanked all those who assisted the family during the difficult time.
