Members of Amanzimtoti SAPS have noted an increase in carjackings not only in the Toti precinct but the greater Durban and neighbouring stations.
Communications officer of Amanzimtoti SAPS, Cpt Charlene Van der Spuy said, “We urge our community to be more vigilant and remain aware of the dangers when travelling to and from their homes as well as visiting areas they don’t usually frequent.”

In light of this, Cpt Van der Spuy issued safety tips to prevent drivers from becoming victims of carjackings.
Below are a few tips:
- Have your key ready, but not visible. Unlock your car when you’re close by. Don’t talk on your cell phone as you walk to your car.
- Check the back seat before getting into your car.
- A well-maintained car is less likely to break down and leave you vulnerable.
- Plan your route and let someone know what your route is and when to expect you at your destination.
- Always check the rear view mirror to see if you are being followed. If so, go to the nearest police station or 24 hour operating petrol station.
- Avoid driving with your windows open and keep the doors locked. Put all valuables out of sight.
- When approaching a red traffic light, slow down so that you only reach it when it turns green.
- Make sure your driveway is well lit and clear of shrubbery. Do not park and wait in front for gate or garage to open. Park and wait in the street before gate opens, so that you have somewhere to drive off, if need be.
- Make sure you avoid sitting in the car with friends late at night in places which is not safe namely, on the side of the road, community parks and beach parking lots.
- When stopping behind another vehicle, leave half a vehicle length in front so you can make an emergency escape if necessary.
- Change your routes and your schedule if possible on a regular basis.
- Make arriving at your destination safer by calling ahead and asking someone to open and close your gate for you.
