Amanzimtoti’s next fishing champ

None of my friends fish, but they say it’s so cool that I do.

Nine-year-old Taylen Singleton showed she has what it takes to emulate her mother and grandmother’s fishing feats after she caught a 6kg catface roccod on her first deepsea fishing trip on Sunday, 27 October.

The daughter of All African record holder and Warnadoone Ski Boat Club member, Bronwen Singleton, and lifelong fisherman Thomas Singleton, and granddaughter of Michelle Richard, who also holds an All African record, the young lass also nailed a 2.5kg roccod and a rainbow runner to cap off a brilliant day on the water.

“I have fished before from the shore when I was younger, but this was my first time deepsea fishing. Watching my mom and dad made me start fishing.” Taylen said the highlight of her maiden deepsea outing was watching the dolphins cavort and the excitement of catching fish was an added bonus.

“None of my friends fish, but they say it’s so cool that I do. I think it’s a sport other young girls should try at least once, because it’s really beautiful out at sea.”

She doesn’t believe she’s a natural, but reckons watching her mom has helped her. “I definitely want to continue fishing and eventually fish competitions like my mom and granny. I think I can be as successful as my mom.”

Taylen is a Grade 3 learner at Warner Beach Prep and her favourite subjects are maths, English and life skills. She is a keen swimmer. “I love horse riding and making arts and crafts. On the weekends I enjoy going to the beach and riding horses – now I’m going to want to fish too.”
