High winds rip roof off in Illovo Beach

A FREAK wind hit Illovo Beach on Thursday, destroying a verandah, ripping tiles off houses and flats and blowing trees over.

Louise du Preez was in her garden when the wind first hit at about 2pm. “I was walking in the garden when a hot wind came up and blew me around the corner of the house.”

“I’ve never felt anything like it. I heard a loud bang like thunder and the roof over the verandah was gone,” she said.

 

Two men charged for illegal shad fishing

TWO men were due to appear in Toti Magistrates court yesterday on charges relating to catching shad during the closed season.

The were found to be in possession of 14 and 15 shad respectively, during a Natal Parks Board operation in the Inyoni Rocks/ Pipeline area on Thursday last week. Another two men were fined for having shad on the same day. They paid admission of guilt fines of R250 and R300 each.

 

Toti man killed in car crash

ROWAN Reed, 23, a past learner of Toti High, was killed in a car crash on Friday.

Rowan was serving in the SAAF and based at Hoedspruit where he was an air traffic controller. It was on Friday that Rowan, together with Donovan Wilton (26) of Kloof, also a PF member, were killed instantly. The two men had been to Phalaborwa for dinner.

 

Armed robberies on increase

THE Toti area was hit by a spate of five armed robberies over the weekend, with four of the robberies taking place in Prospecton.

On Friday at 8.30am armed robbers struck at the NPA camp in Prospecton. Four men, one armed with a gun, stopped the driver of a Mercedes truck worth R150 000 and forced him to drive towards Stanger. They were followed by a Cressida, registration NUZ 134-425. Along the way, the driver was dropped off, and the truck and car sped off.

 

Pedestrians hit

THREE pedestrians were knocked over in the Toti area on the weekend.

On Saturday, at midday, a man was hit by a car in Winklespruit. He was seriously injured and taken to Prince Mshiyeni hospital with multiple injuries. Also on Saturday, at 4.30pm, a man suffered light injuries after being hit by a car on the N2 northbound near Toti. On Sunday a woman was knocked over on the N2 northbound at Umgababa. She was not seriously injured.
