Budding Amanzimtoti artists start a journey of peace

Luné’s entry now goes through to the next level of judging to be done at the district E convention on 2 November.

The winners of first leg of the annual Lions International Peace Poster, hosted by Kingsburgh Lions, have been selected.

“With this year’s theme ‘Journey of Peace’, we had an enthusiastic response from five local primary schools, Athlone Park, Amanzimtoti, Kuswag, Umbogintwini and Warner Beach Prep, who collectively entered just under 300 posters,” said Kingsburgh Lions president, Moira Rigby.

An elimination judging was done on Friday, 11 October, to reduce the poster numbers to 24. This proved to be a major task for the four Kingsburgh Lions members who did the judging, as the standard of art was higher than in previous years and extremely competitive.

The final 24 posters went through to be judged by three members of the Upper South Coast Art Association, Pat McCann, Jane Parr and Callie Pickering, on Wednesday evening, 16 October, at a cocktail party held for the budding young artists, their parents and school representatives at St Mary’s Church hall in Warner Beach.

The winners for the evening function were Luné Benedetti of Kuswag Primary, whose poster was placed first, while second place went to Arnav Ramjuan of Athlone Park Primary and Shreyansh Behara, also from Athlone Park Primary, received a highly commended award. These young artists received monetary rewards for themselves and their schools.

Luné’s poster depicts Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandi, with the hands of Mother Earth, Olympic rings, the bird of peace, flame from the Statue of Liberty and the world with all the flags of different countries. “My teacher, Mrs Curran, inspired me to do my poster. I’m very excited to have won the first round and I’m hopeful I can get a first place again,” said the Grade 7 learner.

Her entry now goes through to the next level of judging to be done at the district E convention, which is to be held at Drakensville on 2 November. “The prize money for the winning artists and their schools has been increased and is quite generous this year. The first placed entry will go through to the next level of judging at the multiple districts convention next year.

Kingsburgh Lions thanks everyone for their contribution towards making the project such a success again this year,” said Moira.
