Mixed bag of alliance league results for Umkomaas golfers

It was wonderful seeing Garth Mulroy and his wife, Catherine, at Umkomaas Golf Club this past weekend.

Garth is out from the United States for a few weeks as he competes in several Vodacom Origins tour events. Proud father, Dave picked a great team for the 10th installment of the alliance league as they came out tops on 87 points, no doubt helped by Garth who as an honorary member plays off +2.

Dave also reminded the members at prize-giving that three of the four members of the fourball were playing together several years ago when they scored the near impossible on the 298m par four 15th hole – a 1, 2, 3 and 4. It was Jan McDermott who’s perfectly struck tee shot flew directly to the green, pitched once and rolled between the men putting to fall into the hole for an ace.

The alliance scores were a mixed bag of results on Saturday, 12 October, as some teams seemed to manage the swirling winds better than others. The greens have come through brilliantly since the spring treatment last month and promise to be spectacular for the coming holiday season.

Winning first place on a count out on 87 points was team Mulroy. Coming in second was Keith and Lesa Vergottini, Denise Nell and Bing Opie.

The club’s annual general meeting was held on Friday, 11 October, and a new committee was sworn in with Graham Coxell being elected club captain. Grateful thanks were extended to Peter Toward, who has served many years on the committee, including several as club captain. Over the past 18 months particularly, Peter has been a dedicated servant of the club, filling in as manager and running around to ensure that all runs smoothly.
