Robbery suspect sentenced to 30 years imprisonment

One of the suspects was armed and the pair ransacked the house before fleeing with electronic items.

Members of Amanzimtoti SAPS were lauded for their sterling work that resulted in the successful conviction of a robbery suspect who was sentenced to 30 years imprisonment on Friday, 13 September.

On 13 October 2018, at about 9pm, a 37-year-old woman and her boyfriend were at her home in Illovo Township when two suspects entered the house through the front door.

Communications officer of Amanzimtoti SAPS, Captain Charlene van der Spuy said, “One suspect produced a firearm and pointed it towards the occupants and demanded cash. They informed the suspects that they don’t have cash on them.  Both occupants of the house were assaulted.”

One of the suspects was armed and the pair ransacked the house before fleeing with electronic items.

The unarmed suspect was known to the victims by sight. They also knew where he resided. The armed suspect was unknown to them.  Sargeant Mbanjwa and Constable Mkhize attended the scene and a case of house robbery was opened.  According to Van Der Spuy, the police officers escorted the victims to point out the house.

“They pointed out a house at Phase 2 Illovo Township. While outside the house a male exited the same house and immediately the complainant and the witness positively identified the same male as the unarmed suspect and the same one that took their property. The suspect was approached by the police officers and was arrested,” she added.

The case was assigned to D/Cst Zithumani of the Amanzimtoti Detective branch who built a strong case against the accused, 21-year-old Luyanda Meyeza, that was presented to the court.

“The accused was found guilty of two counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances in the regional court at Umbumbulu and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for each count. The court ordered the sentences to run concurrently. The accused was also declared unfit to possess a firearm,” she said.

The commander at Amanzimtoti detective branch, Lt-Col Ashburner, congratulated Zithumani on his investigation and ensuring the conviction and sentencing of the accused.
