Treat the flu with spicy drink remedy

Combining ACV, honey, garlic and lemon like this packs the needed punch to get the cold and flu out of your system, and keep it away.

With colder weather comes the risk of catching an awful cold or the flu, which knocks you off your feet and sets you quite a distance back if you’re a busy person, which most of us are.

With Winter upon us, there’s no better time to avoid that cold and flu by trying out Everyday Roots‘ perfect cold remedy. This spicy drink, which is completely natural, should assist you in fighting and keeping off that dreadful cold.

Well-loved ingredients:

  • Honey
  • Apple cider vinegar
  • Lemon
  • Garlic

Why these ingredients?

Honey

Honey acts as a natural sweetener, which is necessary with the garlic and ACV combination. It’s also anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal-but if you are drinking it for a cold it’s really the anti-viral part that matters. Honey also possesses the wonderful power of soothing a pesky cough.

Lemon

Lemon adds fresh flavor, while working as a natural anti-viral component. Lemon works in tandem with the honey to flush out the virus that is taking over your cells.

Apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar’s health benefits are virtually endless, with some theories having more solid backing than others. The main benefit it has in this drink is soothing a sore throat and relieving congestion, both of which Everyday Roots has found it extremely successful at doing.

Garlic

Good old garlic, infamous for ruining dates, does pack a mean punch when it comes to health benefits. What is known is that it works a treat on clearing up congestion and shortening the duration of the cold.

Method to the madness:

  • 10-11 peeled and lightly mashed cloves of garlic
  • 1 1/2 -2 cups of water
  • 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar
  • 1 lemon
  • 4 tablespoons of honey (or more to taste)

Directions

  1. Simmer the peeled and mashed garlic in 1 ½ cups of water for 10 minutes, you can use 2 cups if you prefer a more diluted flavor.
  2. Strain.
  3. Stir into the strained liquid apple cider vinegar, the juice of 1 lemon, and at least 4 tablespoons honey. Drink 2-3 times daily as needed.

This will keep well in the refrigerator for up to five days, and can be gently reheated on the stove top.
