Learn about portrait painting at the next USCAA meeting

The Upper South Coast Art Association will hold its September meeting at Amanzimtoti library on Saturday, 21 September.

The meeting starts at 1pm and ends at about 4pm. Refreshments will be supplied for a small fee. The afternoon meeting will be preceded by the morning drawing session, which will begin at 9am and end at about noon. The drawing session will be conducted by Jean Taylor and the drawing requirements are: Pencils in various strengths, eg h/hb (light) and 6b-9b (dark); ruler, rubber, knife or sharpener. She will provide paper and source material and will teach tonal value and negative space.

The demo this month will be given by Karen Dennyschene, who will show how to do a portrait in mixed media. Karen is an artist and art teacher based in Umhlanga. Her love of art started at an early age which led her to study graphic design. She worked in the advertising industry and freelanced as an illustrator for a publishing company.

She undertakes commissions for interior decorators, private individuals and also participates in group exhibitions. Her signature works are mainly botanicals and anything to do with nature, sometimes with a twist. She loves experimenting with techniques and colours and can’t resist a splash of metallic paint here and there. She is inspired by nature’s vivid colours and the beauty and energy of her surroundings.

She is an accredited Golden Artist Educator and was honoured to be sponsored by them. Her association with Golden Paints took her to interesting places such as Slovenia, where she did some training and also gave a workshop. She recently attended the Golden Artist Educator conference in Miami where educators from all over the world got together to learn and share their knowledge.

Karen was selected to present and demonstrate one of her techniques at the conference. For more information, call Rose Dickens on 031-903-1820.
