Assist Edu-Paw sterilisation programme

Within the current class, there are just seven dogs that need to be sterilised.

The Edu-Paw organisation serves as the educational side to the SPCA by providing information to children in an effort to bring about a full understanding of the responsibility of owning and caring for a dog. The aim is to also instil a culture of love and compassion for dogs. It was founded by Cathy Keegan, who is an avid animal lover.

There are four classes held for the year, during which 12 children are taken on an eight week canine care programme.  Every aspect of proper canine care is covered during the weekly classes at the SPCA Amanzimtoti on a Saturday morning from 9am until 11.30am. Within the duration of the classes, the dogs are de-wormed, vaccinated and sterilised.  However, since the organisation solely relies on donations and sponsorships, it is essential that the community assists.

“The sterilisation is probably the biggest cost to the SPCA.  We rely on donations from the public to make this all happen and have a few faithful supporters, for whom we are very grateful but the cost of vaccinations, sterilisation and vet bills are exceedingly high. We are in desperate need of funds to vaccinate and sterilise all these dogs to stop the cycle of over breeding and suffering. The local vet gives the SPCA a small discount, but we still have to pay R1500 for each animal sterilised. We are desperately appealing for support from the community and businesses,” said Kathy.

Within the current class, there are just seven dogs left for sterilisation.

“It is not just about sterilisations, it is about love and compassion.  We are changing mindsets and creating hope. To see how much love and compassion these children have for their dogs is just heart warming.  The children from our programme often come back as volunteers and that to me is incredible.  These volunteers are dedicated and hard working however, they need stable jobs.  If anyone can assist them that would be lovely,” she added.
