The Community Crime Prevention Organisation (CCPO) has released some guidelines to follow to keep you safe:
- Have an alarm installed by a reputable security company with armed response.
- When employing domestic workers, ask for an identification document and make a copy of the document and keep in a safe place.
- Educate your domestic worker about not allowing any people onto your property without your consent. There are scams where people arrive with a story that they are there to take an appliance for repairs or so on.
- If people arrive to read electricity or water meters on your property, insist on seeing official identification and if possible, follow up with the relevant department before you allow them in.
- Be aware that people may present themselves with a ruse that they are doing collections for various ‘charities’ – this is almost guaranteed to be a scam.
- A good fence around the property, electrified if possible, is your first line of defense.
- Consider fitting security lights which are motion activated at night.
- Other options for increasing your security outside are dogs or motion detectors to warn you if someone is on the property.
- If an intruder is observed on the property, contact your alarm company or the police.
- Do not approach an intruder yourself.
