Discussions around speed calming measures given the green light

The meeting follows two accidents which occurred last week.

A meeting to find a tangible solution to prevent accidents on Kingsway is set to take place between members of the eThekwini Transport Authority and Metro Police.  This follows two accidents which occurred in the vicinity, last week.

Ward 97 councillor, André Beetge, said, “Speed humps would, however, not be introduced to this road, as it’s a main arterial route and reducing speed to 30kmh, which is effectively what speed humps aim to do, would have adverse negative effects on the traffic flow.  Not only does Kingsway boast a few blind rises and corners, but the problem is that there is just too much activity at that particular intersection. The meeting will aim to allow relevant departments to find a possible solution for both Arbour Road and the Kingsway intersection.”

According to Beetge, while one accident is already one too many, statistically spoken and given the daily traffic that uses Kingsway, there are actually only a few incidents.

“These can often be attributed to commuters being impatient on the road and not ensuring that conditions are safe before entering from Inyoni Rocks. From discussions with the towing fraternity, it would appear that about 80 per cent of these accidents involve a taxi and then possibly as a result of the intersection being used as an unofficial taxi stop. As such, we have also requested a meeting with the taxi regional management structure,” he added.
