Being cautious could not save Amanzimtoti hijacked couple

Response officers and a passing SAPS vehicle responded quickly, but the hijackers escaped with the couple’s Toyota Tazz.

An Amanzimtoti couple who was hijacked in Warner Beach on Thursday evening, 12 September said being cautious could not even save them. Devandran Reddy, 44, and his wife had just finished with a delivery of flowers in Harcombe Drive at about 5.15pm when a silver VW Polo jammed them in.

“Four men jumped out. One came to my driver’s door and tried to smash the glass, but we had anti-smash, so it held. Another one opened the back door, which was still unlocked after doing the delivery, and opened my door.

They forced me out of the car and a third man went around to my wife’s side, but fortunately she undid her safety belt, jumped out and ran away.” The woman left behind her handbags, which contained her ID, bank cards, four cellphones and a tablet.

Two shots were fired at Devandran. They missed him, but one grazed the foot of the homeowner who had come out to see what the commotion was. They said response officers and a passing SAPS vehicle responded quickly, but the hijackers escaped with the couple’s Toyota Tazz.

“We opened a case, but we haven’t yet had any feedback. We are such cautious people, especially when we drive around, but it was so unexpected. They definitely didn’t follow us. It just shows that no matter how vigilant you are, you can’t stop this from happening.”
