Wessex Drive compromised by recent rain

The road has been closed with immediate effect

WESSEX Drive in St Winifreds has been compromised by the recent rain.

According to councillor André Beetge, the road surface has been undermined half way into Seaside Lane off Wessex Drive. He said the embankment collapsed due to saturation which in turn caused the storm water infrastructure to come apart.

“Ground water, not sewage or potable water, outfall continues to flow from the still existing infrastructure which is embedded in unstable and saturated soil. Not only is the current condition already dangerous, but continued use will cause complete collapse. The road has been closed with immediate effect,” he said.

Beetge added that access is restricted to only allow residents of the adjacent properties thoroughfare to their homes. He urged motorists to use alternative routes with immediate effect while departments seek further guidance from engineering.

Beetge also said that residents have taken to social media platforms to enquire about sidewalk pavers that are being uplifted and washaway after the rain towards the lower end of Gus Brown intersection by Andrew Zondo Drive.

“The pavers have been uplifted by the water department as part of installing new water supply infrastructure into the larger Warner beach area towards Winklespruit (time frames etc previously reported on the SUN platform). The project is fully under control and pavers will be replaced when engineers are satisfied that the new infrastructure is correctly embedded and tested,” he said.

Beetge added that the wash away lower down towards the intersection is not as a result of the infrastructure replacement, but rather incorrect stormwater disbursement from the block of flats at the corner into the road surface. This as opposed to it being correctly embedded and dispersing into the submerged municipal stormwater network.
