Residents fear recycling will fall away

According to concerned residents, there has been a lack in the collection of recycling bags for almost a year.

The eThekwini Municipality claims that they are unaware of any issues pertaining to the collection of orange recycling bags in Amanzimtoti.  Residents are concerned if the collection of orange bags does not resume, then the culture of recycling in the community will also fall away.  There has been a lack in the collection of recycling bags for almost a year.

One such resident is 66-year-old Virginia Sedge who is able to confirm that her orange recycling bags have not been collected for almost a year.  “The orange recycling bags was such a fantastic and good initiative.  Residents were excited to put their bags out every week.  We would do so proudly because it was our way of helping the environment.  It is disappointing that this project has been put on hold.  I still try to recycle however I have to commute to Winklespruit, where the bags are being collected.  I truly hope that the collection in Amanzimtoti will start up again.”

Meanwhile, ward  97 councillor, André Beetge commented on the matter and explained that the interim have however noted efforts from locally based Social Waste Management that can be contacted on 065-022-2815.

“They are in process of supplying them with the normal collection schedule so that they are (unofficially) able to pick up some of the slack until the municipal matter is finalised,” he added.

However, eThekwini Municipality’s spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela said, “The recycling program is continuing at Amanzimtoti as there is distribution and collection of orange bags in the area. We are unaware of any issues in the said area, however, residents can call the Cleansing ad Solid Waste offices on 031 311 8804 and enquire further.” Visit https:/www.facebook.com/socialwastemanagementsa/ for more information.
