Make recycling possible [LETTER]

I have bags of recyclable plastic piling up. If anyone knows how to properly dispose of it, please let me know.

EDITOR – It is with growing concern that the recycling in Amanzimtoti (and most of KZN) has not resumed.

The entire world is advocating environmental awareness and preservation and taking great steps forward, but we are falling behind. Even though our kids are learning the importance of recycling at school, how are they expected to practice it when there are no facilities available?

I have been a dedicated recycler, but since the orange bags have not been collected for the past one-and-a-half years, I have been struggling to find appropriate places to dispose of recyclable household garbage. There are the green bins in different areas and schools that take used paper, but what about cardboard and milk cartons? There are also a few glass banks in several schools, but what about plastic? I have called several recycling companies to ask for help, but they do not accept household plastic items. Isn’t it about time that something is done about this?

In most countries it is compulsory to recycle, and in Europe people get big fines for not recycling – they are even given bins with compartments to separate all recyclable items at home, and even on the streets bins with various divisions are available. As you know, it is a great environmental hazard to dump recyclable plastic with regular garbage – it takes hundreds of years (if not forever) to disintegrate.

Just as we should not tolerate the criminal activities in our community, we should not tolerate the crime of polluting our earth. What kind of planet will we leave behind for our children and future generations if we simply let all this slide?

I hope that the councillor and appropriate municipal authorities take responsibility and do something about this as soon as possible. My plead to the municipality and different channels have fallen on deaf ears.

In the meantime, I have bags of recyclable plastic piling up. If anyone knows how to properly dispose of it, please let me know. Contact me on 076-164-2422.
