School’s disaster management plan tested

ER24, ET Rapid Response, the school’s security contractor, and Netcare 911 were all involved.

FOLLOWING a recent KZN Department of Education meeting, with all the principals and governing body chairpersons, Kingsway High School planned a mock-disaster on Thursday morning, 22 August to test its staff and students’ readiness for an emergency evacuation.

ER24, ET Rapid Response, the school’s security contractor, and Netcare 911 were all involved.

“We simulated multiple explosions in the hospitality classroom’s kitchen area, with fire and with four people ‘injured’. Kingsway High’s first aid team, consisting of teachers and learners, were the first responders to the patients. This was executed within the first five minutes. Thereafter emergency services took over the ‘treatment’, said principal Sandra du Toit.

“By doing the exercise, we have realised our shortfalls and we are now in the process of reviewing the disaster management plan to accommodate the sectors that we felt we fell short on.”

The whole exercise took about 40 minutes and the school thanks all the emergency services that took part in the mock disaster.
