Police retrieves suspect’s firearm from sea

The suspect tossed his firearm into the sea, however, police cordoned off the area and waited for low tide before they attempted to retrieve it.

A thug found himself behind bars after the firearm he threw into the sea was retrieved by police using metal detectors on Friday evening, 2 August.

The CCPO reported a person was robbed near Amanzimtoti railway station and one of the witnesses was allegedly shot in the chest by the robber. Amanzimtoti SAPS and paramedics responded to the scene. The description of the suspect was circulated and CCPO, Amanzimtoti SAPS crime prevention unit, ET Rapid Response, Blue Security and Beach Road Neighbourhood Watch members cordoned off the area.

“In the vicinity of the promenade residents in the flats pointed to an area where the suspect had disappeared and SAPS crime prevention found footprints leading to a large storm water drain,” said CCPO committee member, George Snodey.

“A SAPS member entered the drain followed by an ET member to follow the armed suspect. Eventually the footprints in the drain stopped below a manhole on the promenade in the vicinity of Waterberg flats. By the time the SAPS and ET members had climbed out the manhole, the suspect had been arrested by other SAPS members on the beach.”
