Toti resident praises efficient firemen

What could have been a roaring blaze was professionally extinguished.

A Lagoon Point resident was full of praise for Toti Fire Brigade department after their prompt response to battle and extinguish a bush fire close to a complex on Sunday afternoon, 28 July.

“It was an idyllic end to a Sunday afternoon. The sun had just set and the view over the lagoon and ocean was one of dusky hues – orange, gold, turquoise. The breeze from the north was barely a whisper – fortunately. I had just finished a lazy afternoon braai when all of a sudden, snap, crackle and pop – the bush just on the other side of the fence was ablaze,” said Andrew Mitchell.

“I called Prospecton Fire Department, who redirected me to Toti Fire Brigade. The first responder took down the details and promised to send a truck.” Andrew said within minutes, two firemen, armed with a spade and fire beater, were outside the complex’s gate with the fire truck not far behind.

“I directed the gents to the fire. By this time it had grown substantially in size and intensity. One of the crew, Hans, informed me that the palms were a real danger and some were already fuelling the fire. Soon the truck was in position and they were rolling out the hose.

“A few minutes later and what could have been a roaring blaze was professionally extinguished. I learnt from the team that they had just come back from another call-out when they got redirected to this one.” The cause was attributed to a vagrant who was seen sprinting from the scene, and in the dry winter conditions it didn’t take long to get out of control.

“I thank Toti Fire Brigade for their good service and how heartening it is to know these folks respond so well to a call of distress. Danger was averted in good time, thanks to them,” said Andrew. Call Toti Fire Brigade on 031-361-0000.
