Students warm hearts on Mandela Day

Twenty five JR Education Centre students, from Grade 3 to 12, were joined by teachers and tutors, to make sandwiches for The Domino Foundation’s Feeding programme.

Students who find it challenging to fit into the mainstream education system rose to the challenge of making sandwiches for disadvantaged pupils at local crèches on Mandela Day.

Twenty five JR Education Centre students, from Grade 3 to 12, were joined by teachers and tutors, to make sandwiches for The Domino Foundation’s Feeding programme, which is run in the Toti by Cheryl Dann. The programme impacts some 4 800 school children in the area who would otherwise face their schooldays on empty stomachs.

Cheryl’s son, Timothy, who will graduate with the centre’s support this year, commented after he had buttered his last sandwich, “I have had to overcome obstacles to get my Matric and so I appreciate how hard it must be for these children trying to learn without even having had a meal.”

Jessica Ratcliffe, the centre’s principal, was enthusiastic about its contribution to mark Mandela Day: “I was really happy to have this opportunity to teach my students that being involved in the community and helping others in need is important. It is rewarding in many aspects and builds good character and values. We have often been involved in small projects around the community and it was a pleasure to be able to contribute in such a small but impactful way today.”
